Kinder Bosses

by Linda  Talley

Many Boomer bosses are afraid of Generation X’s aggressiveness and unfortunately, this fear keeps them small and putting out fires rather than training and mobilizing a work force.  Today’s successful boss throws out fear and opens him/herself up to all possibilities because nothing will remain the same for long.  It’s the bad boss that’s seen as holding the group up, taking hostages, staying in the rut.  Bad bosses are OUT!  Leaders are IN!

Here are 10 things to do in order to be the kinder boss (leader):

Listen more than you talk.

Ask permission to give advice.

Acknowledge people a lot!

Tell stories rather then give commands or direction.

Re-enroll and re-commit your staff around the mission of the company.

Make sure your staff knows what role they play in achieving   company goals and why it’s critical rather than just a good idea.

Be congruent.  That means—what you think is what you say is what you do.

Tell the truth even when it’s not comfortable.

Bring together the frustrations and the talents of the company together as a whole by taking the leadership role—even if you don’t have title.

Challenge your people to grow themselves!  Use adult to adult communication.
