Don't Wait

by Tim Connor

The new year will be here before we all know it. Now is the time to spend adequate serious time in reflection and review of this year's successes, challenges, weaknesses, failures and goals that were not achieved, as well as goals that were. It is also a time for careful planning for the next year to ensure it is your best ever – in all areas of your life.

This activity is not just one that can be used in your career, but in your personal life as well. Where are you out of balance? What decisions/actions have you been procrastinating and why? What attitudes, habits, beliefs, behaviors need better understanding, modification or elimination?

People, who either do not spend adequate time in this process, or do it without any serious intent to use the knowledge gained for self-improvement, short-change themselves and their future. Life happens. Circumstances and people change. People lose interest in some things and develop new interests in others. Everything is dynamic. Everything is either growing or dying. To fail to understand this simple concept and weave it into your life plans, goals, philosophy and values is to be naïve.

Now is the time to plan. Now is the time to think. Now is the time for change. Now is the time for new growth. If not now, then when?

I, too, in my life, have been guilty of procrastination, denial, false hopes and 'wishing, hoping and dreaming'. And I can tell you that, without time spent in self-understanding, you will never really know yourself; your motives, reasons, needs, desires, hopes, dreams, frustrations and weaknesses. You will live your days in confusion.

So why not schedule a few days now, during the holidays, to spend in quiet contemplation, self-evaluation, meditation, and planning. Begin the new year and a new millenium with a renewed sense of direction, purpose, passion and focus. What have you got to lose? One thing is for sure: without it you can fairly accurately predict what your next few years will be like. If you like what you see, just forget about the exercise and have a great time this holiday season. However, if you don't like some aspects of what you see in 'your future' then you have everything to gain.
